Incorporated July 7, 1889, the Chattahoochee and Gulf Railroad formed one of the spokes of Central’s line into Alabama. From Columbia, Ala., on the Chattahoochee River, the line originally extended some 80 miles to Lockhart, Ala.
The section between Columbia and Dothan was constructed in 1900, and operations were begun May 2 of that year. On Aug. 12, 1900, the section between Dothan and Hartford was completed, and on Dec. 9, service was extended to Sellersville.
The last part of the line, from Sellersville to Lockhart, was completed in 1904. The entire track was leased to the Central at the time of its construction.
The present western terminus of the line is Dothan, with a connection to Hartford via the Hartford and Slocomb Railroad, a line sold by the Central to a group of businessmen of that area.
