The predecessor of the Augusta and Savannah Rail Road was the Augusta and Waynesboro Rail Road.
The railroad was incorporated December 31, 1838. Connecting with the Central Rail Road and Banking Company at Millen, the line was first opened for freight and passenger trains November 21, 1851.
The name was changed to The Augusta and Savannah Rail Road February 16, 1856, and six years later, in 1862, the railroad was leased to the Central Rail Road and Banking Company; on October 24, 1895, it was leased to the Central of Georgia Railway Company.
In the reorganization move in 1948, the Central came into possession of the line.
